Minnesota Real Estate > Eden Prairie:

General Info - Top

The former farming town of Eden Prairie provides a unique mix of business, agriculture and upscale living in Hennepin County. The city is home to friendly people, excellent schools, thousands of acres of parks and open space, and a thriving business community.
Eden Prairie's 100-acre downtown district, the Major Center Area, is undergoing extensive renovation to become a pedestrian-friendly, architecturally unified gathering area. Convenient, safe public transportation is a major focus in Eden Prairie, and the community promotes bus usage and ridesharing.
Eden Prairie is within an hour’s drive of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, and Flying Cloud Airport provides local service. Flying Cloud was originally a Navy training facility, but after the airport became public in 1946, businesses began moving to Hennepin County, and the growth has continued to this day.

Education - Top

The Eden Prairie School District is home to award-winning Eden Prairie High School. The Minnetonka and Hopkins districts serve students in some areas of the city. Many colleges and universities are located within Hennepin County, including the University of Minnesota and Hennepin County Technical College.

History - Top

Native Americans were the first residents of modern-day Eden Prairie. In 1851, a treaty opened much of the land west of the Mississippi River, making it easy for pioneers to settle. Elizabeth Fry Ellet named the town after she visited the area for the New York Times and declared it the “garden spot” of the territory. The farming community grew slowly over the next century until the Flying Cloud Airport opened to the public in 1946, bringing businesses and new residents to the area in droves.

Population - Top

Eden Prairie has approximately 54,901 residents.
