Carver sits on the west bank of the Minnesota River, just 32 miles upstream from the state capital of St. Paul. In 1854, former territorial Gov. Alexander Ramsey named the town in honor of Jonathan Carver, an Englishman who came upon the area while exploring the Minnesota River in 1766.
Carver's river atmosphere, its easy access to job sites and its residents' love of history all draw people to this quaint town. Carver is the oldest city in Carver County and the first city to have a Historic District on the National Historic Register. The Historic District has 100 structures, including two stone arch bridges and a wooden railroad water tower. The Temperance Hotel, which was constructed in 1857, was the first hotel built in Carver. One of many original hotels, only the Temperance remains.
Carver is not only about history; it also has several active groups, including the Volunteer Fire Department, the Lions Club, the Ladies Auxiliary, the Senior Citizens Club and several softball teams. Carver has two large parks with playground areas, tennis courts, softball fields and shelters. A third park is being constructed, with plans for three additional ball fields and volleyball courts. There's also a boat ramp for access to the Minnesota River.
